Before You Begin
If you are a veteran homeschooler, you may already be doing some of the first steps that I’m going to recommend. However, if you are new to homeschooling, or new to the Law of Attraction, I would suggest following these steps until you get the feel of your child’s learning style and your own teaching style.
The first thing that you should do is devise a plan or schedule. Even as an unschooler, you should have an idea of how you want your day to go. It does not have to be a strict schedule and does not have to be followed to the letter, but a plan is a good way to figure out which direction you want to start in. If you go off your path, that’s fine, but having a path means that if you get a little lost in someting else, you know where to go to get back on track. After a while you’ll know what to expect out of your day and you can adapt your “plan” accordingly. Try not to fret over sticking to the plan or schedule, use it as a guideline. Remember, It’s ok to color outside the lines!
When the boys were smaller I used Oak Meadow curriculum. They were very unschooling friendly. There was a plan, but not a strict schedule to things. That is the style I would suggest. However, if you like a more structured day, you can use a daily planner to set up your day.
Before you set up your schedule, figure out what you want to accomplish. Ask yourself what your ultimate goal is. You can do this for the school year, a month, or a week. I’d suggest starting with your goal for the year. It doesn’t have to be spelled out if that doesn’t fit your needs. Be as detailed or as general as you feel is best.
For Example: This year our goal is to have 5 fieldtrips, get through pre-algebra, learn the american constitution, and create a family newsletter that the children contribute to monthly. (note: not our actual goals for the year)
As you can see, the above goal is detailed in some areas, and not so detailed in others. The areas that are more detailed may be subjects that are more difficult for your child to get through, or maybe something that you’d like to focus on because that’s where their interests lie. The same goes for those subjects that are less detailed. Whatever fits your family best is what you should focus on in your ultimate goal.
Once you know what your long term goal is, then you can break that down by month, by week, and then by day. Again, be as detailed or as vague as you feel comfortable with. The daily goals should have the most detail out of all of them. This will be your main focus and where your “plan” takes shape.
Some of the things to include into your daily plan are:
- Waking up tasks - getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth, etc.
- Meditation or affirmation focus
- Subject work
- Field Trips
- Play time
- Meals
- Reading
- outdoor activities
- Other
The above list is an example of some of the things that should be included at least once a day. This should include any activities connected with spiritual, physical and mental growth of everyone within your family.
The Law of Attraction states that what you focus on is what will come to you. Your plans or schedules should reflect what you want for your family. Make sure to create an atmosphere of joy and laughter, because that is the energy that will bring the good things to your life and your children’s lives.
Next time I will discuss Meditation and Affirmations for children.
